You’ve Landed! What Happens at Korean Immigration

Welcome to Korea! As soon as the plane door opens, your next steps are immigration, baggage claim, and customs. Here’s how to move smoothly — and the short Korean phrases that help in real-life situations.

๐Ÿ›‚ Step 1. Immigration Check

Follow the “Arrivals / ์ž…๊ตญ (ip-guk)” signs to the immigration hall. You’ll show your passport and arrival card to the officer.

Most immigration officers can speak basic English, but short polite Korean phrases help:

· ๊ด€๊ด‘์ด์—์š” (gwangwang-ieyo) — I’m here for tourism.
· ์ผ์ฃผ์ผ ๋จธ๋ฌผ ๊ฑฐ์˜ˆ์š” (il-ju-il meomul geo-yeyo) — I’ll stay for a week.
· ํ˜ธํ…”์ด์—์š” (hotel-ieyo) — I’m staying at a hotel.

If the officer asks about your return flight, you can show your e-ticket. That’s normal and quick.

๐ŸŽ’ Step 2. Baggage Claim

After immigration, follow the “Baggage Claim / ์ˆ˜ํ•˜๋ฌผ ์ฐพ๋Š” ๊ณณ” signs. Find your carousel number on the screen — it shows your flight number and city name.

If you can’t find your luggage:

· ์ œ ์ง์ด ์•ˆ ๋‚˜์™”์–ด์š” (je jim-i an nawas-eoyo) — My luggage didn’t come out.
· ๋ถ„์‹ค๋ฌผ ์„ผํ„ฐ ์–ด๋””์˜ˆ์š”? (bun-sil-mul senteo eo-di-eyo?) — Where is the lost & found?

Airline staff will usually guide you in English if you mention your flight number.

๐Ÿงพ Step 3. Customs Area

Once you get your luggage, head toward “Customs / ์„ธ๊ด€”. If you have nothing to declare, follow the green lane. If you do, use the red lane.

Most travelers just go through the green lane and hand over the form. If an officer asks something, keep it simple:

· ์‹ ๊ณ ํ•  ๊ฒƒ ์—†์–ด์š” (singohal geot eopseoyo) — I have nothing to declare.
· ์Œ์‹ ์—†์–ด์š” (eumsik eopseoyo) — I don’t have food items.

๐Ÿšช Step 4. Exit to the Arrival Hall

After customs, you’ll enter the arrival hall — where you can buy a SIM card, T-money, or book a bus/train to Seoul. But we’ll cover that in the next part of this series.
