๐Ÿš– Riding a Taxi in Korea — What to Say and Expect

Taking a taxi in Korea is easier than you might think — even if you don’t speak Korean. Whether you’re leaving Incheon Airport or hailing a cab in Seoul, you can quickly find, ride, and pay safely with just a few simple Korean phrases. Learn how to say your destination, check the fare, and make sure your trip goes smoothly in one of the world’s most efficient taxi systems.

๐Ÿš Step 1. Choosing the Right Taxi

At the airport or in the city, you’ll usually see three main types:

  • ์ผ๋ฐ˜ ํƒ์‹œ (ilban taeksi) — Standard taxi (silver or orange)
  • ๋ชจ๋ฒ” ํƒ์‹œ (mobeom taeksi) — Deluxe taxi (black, higher fare, more space)
  • ๊ตญ์ œ ํƒ์‹œ (gukje taeksi) — International taxi with English-speaking drivers

If you want to speak in English, go for a ๊ตญ์ œ ํƒ์‹œ (gukje taeksi) — you can say:

· ๊ตญ์ œํƒ์‹œ ์–ด๋””์„œ ํƒ€์š”? (gukje taeksi eodiseo tayo?) — Where can I take an international taxi?

Or, if you prefer to use your phone, open Kakao T and tap “Taxi.” Enter your pickup point and destination in English — the app will translate automatically.

๐Ÿ—บ๏ธ Step 2. Saying Your Destination

Taxi drivers in Korea are friendly, but not all speak English. When you get in, you can show your hotel name or address on your phone. If you want to say it out loud, try:

· โ–ณโ–ณํ˜ธํ…” ๊ฐ€ ์ฃผ์„ธ์š”. (โ–ณโ–ณ hotel ga juseyo) — Please go to โ–ณโ–ณ Hotel.
· ์„œ์šธ์—ญ ๊ฐ€ ์ฃผ์„ธ์š”. (seoul-yeok ga juseyo) — Please go to Seoul Station.
· ์ด ์ฃผ์†Œ๋กœ ๊ฐ€ ์ฃผ์„ธ์š”. (i juso-ro ga juseyo) — Please go to this address.

If your driver doesn’t understand, simply show your map app screen — that always works.

๐Ÿ’ณ Step 3. Paying the Fare

Most taxis in Korea accept both cash and card, and even mobile pay like Samsung Pay or Apple Pay (depending on the device).

· ์นด๋“œ ๋ผ์š”? (kadeu dwaeyo?) — Do you take card?
· ํ˜„๊ธˆ ๋ผ์š”? (hyeon-geum dwaeyo?) — Do you take cash?
· ์˜์ˆ˜์ฆ ์ฃผ์„ธ์š”. (yeongsu-jeung juseyo) — Please give me a receipt.
๐Ÿ’ก Tip: There’s no tipping culture in Korea — just pay the fare on the screen.

๐Ÿ•“ Step 4. During the Ride

Taxi screens display the route and fare in real time. If you want to know how long it will take, ask:

· ์–ผ๋งˆ๋‚˜ ๊ฑธ๋ ค์š”? (eolmana geollyeoyo?) — How long will it take?

The driver will probably point at the navigation screen showing the estimated arrival time. That prediction is based on real-time GPS data, so it’s usually very accurate — but remember, traffic in Seoul can get heavy between 5 p.m. and 7 p.m., so the ride might take a bit longer. Also, don’t be surprised if your driver tries a friendly chat — many Korean taxi drivers enjoy small talk with travelers.
