๐Ÿงญ Checking Directions in Korea

Sometimes when you ask for directions in Korea, people speak a little too fast — or you might miss part of what they said. Don’t worry! These simple Korean travel phrases for asking directions will help you double-check your route politely and confidently while exploring Korea.

Step 1. Asking Which Way

When you’re not sure which direction to go, these are the easiest and most useful phrases to ask. Koreans often accompany their answers with gestures, so pay attention to the direction they point to — it’s usually accurate!

  • ์˜ค๋ฅธ์ชฝ์ด์—์š”? (oreunjjok-ieyo) — Is it to the right?
  • ์™ผ์ชฝ์ด์—์š”? (oenjjok-ieyo) — Is it to the left?
  • ์ง์ง„์ด์—์š”? (jikjin-ieyo) — Straight ahead?
Tip: In Korea, people often use hand gestures to explain directions. If someone says “์ €์ชฝ์ด์—์š”~” while pointing, just follow the direction of their hand!

Step 2. Double-Checking the Route

After hearing directions, use these short questions to make sure you understood correctly. Koreans often say “์ญ‰ ๊ฐ€์„ธ์š”” (“Go straight ahead”) — a friendly way to mean “keep going without turning.”

  • ์ด ๊ธธ๋กœ ์ญ‰ ๊ฐ€์š”? (i gillo jjuk gayo) — Should I keep going this way?
  • ํšก๋‹จ๋ณด๋„ ๊ฑด๋„ˆ์š”? (hoengdan bodo geonneoyo) — Do I cross the crosswalk?
  • ์ €๊ธฐ ๋ณด์ด๋Š” ๊ฑด๋ฌผ์ด์—์š”? (jeogi boineun geonmul ieyo) — Is it that building over there?
Tip: In many Korean cities, street names and building numbers are clearly marked, but locals often give directions using landmarks instead — like cafés, convenience stores, or banks. So don’t be surprised if someone says, “Go past the CU and turn right,” instead of using street names.

Step 3. Saying Thanks

Once you find your way, don’t forget to say thank you! Koreans truly appreciate polite gratitude, and it’s common for locals to even walk with you part of the way if you look confused. These expressions will help you show appreciation for their kindness.

  • ๊ฐ์‚ฌํ•ฉ๋‹ˆ๋‹ค! (gamsa hamnida) — Thank you!
  • ์ •๋ง ์นœ์ ˆํ•˜์„ธ์š”. (jeongmal chinjeol haseyo) — You’re so kind.
  • ๋•๋ถ„์— ์ฐพ์•˜์–ด์š”. (deokbune chajasseoyo) — I found it thanks to you.
Tip: Many Koreans will go out of their way to help. Some even walk with you to your destination, saying “๊ฐ™์ด ๊ฐ€์š”” (“I'll take you there”). It’s a small but touching example of Korean kindness.
